    The Schomburgk’s deer is similar in its appearance to the Barasingha deer, but possess larger, basket-like antlers with up to 33 points.

    Schomburgk’s deer

    Only the male Schomburgk’s deer have antlers. The dark stripe across the upper jaw behind the nose is characteristic for this deer species.

    The Schomburgk’s deer live normally in family groups with one male, a few females and their youngsters.

    The Schomburgk’s deer inhabited swampy plains with long grass and shrubs in central Thailand. The commercial rice production destroyed the deer’s habitat and caused its extinction.

    Schomburgk’s Deer

    Rarest deer species. Less than 20 animals were ever kept or born in a zoo.

    Shoulder height : Less than a Red deer, about 100 cm. Similar size and appearance like the Barasingha deer.

    Habitat : swampy plains with long grass, sugar cane and shrubs in Central Thailand. Dense vegetation and forests were avoided.

    Extinction : 1932, by overhunting and habitat destruction
